I went and helped with some smiles… it’s my job.
Johannesburg, 21 October 2011: Faces will light up when The Smile Foundation and kulula.com celebrate their first Smile Week in early November. With the help of kulula fans, the airline, in partnership with The Smile Foundation, has raised over R800 000 that will grant 60 disadvantaged children the opportunity to receive brand new smiles.
During the first kulula Smile Week, which runs from 31 October until 4 November 2011, 30 children will undergo life-changing facial reconstructive surgery at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Apart from cleft lip and palate repairs, numerous other reconstructive surgical procedures will take place during this week. Three lengthy facial reanimation surgeries will also be performed by Professor George Psaras, Medical Director of The Smile Foundation and the team from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at University of Witwatersrand. Prof. Psaras is one of only a select few surgeons in the world skilled to perform this complex surgery.
“Facial reanimation involves the grafting of the Gracillis muscle from the inner thigh and parachuting this into the cheek. Microsurgery is then conducted to attach the veins, nerves and arteries,” says Psaras.

Some of us need some training
Thank You and Congratulations
On behalf of everyone at the Topsy Foundation I would like to say a very big thank you for your support and a huge congratulations.
We had 9 top celebrity comedians cycling for Topsy in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge this year. 8 of them raced against Chris Forrest in a relay. The relay team consisted of John Vlismas, Nik Rabinowitz Ndumiso Lindi, Warren Robertson, Trevor Gumbi, Dave Levinsohn, Joey Rasdien and Malcolm Ferreira. It was called the Topsy HERO Race Against Forrest. These comedians all rode the same brand new mountain bicycle donated by Linden Cycles.

MAYBE THE COMICS CAN DO BETTER THAN SOME RANDOM JUDGES?
Once upon a time there were some judges nobody had ever heard of, who gave out awards for comedy. We thought… Wouldn’t it be nice if the comics voted for the people in the industry? And maybe also the actual people who regularly go to dark and dirty comedy clubs got to Vote?

I AM A PRIZE-GIVING-GOLFING BITCH!
Sometimes comedians will lie and say they love doing golf days. Yip a bunch of drunk guys heckling at the prize-giving is their idea of a great gig? But sometimes a really cool bunch of people get it right.
The guys at Golf Digest have asked me to MC at the Prize-giving for 8 golf days. The Subs Challenge is truly one of the best golfing experiences currently on offer. The readers get to meet each other, and they get to play the best courses in the country. The winners of each golf day all get to go to Sun City to play for a chance to go to the Tournament in Mauritius. Nice…

FAME AT LAST… WELL IT’S A TV GUIDE!
Warren Robertson edits a TV guide for People Magazine. He gives comedians a page with a Q&A, and they guest as a columnist. My one was for July 2010. I had just made a huge decision to move to JHB from Cape Town. It seems cape Town was becoming a bit dry on the comedy front. So the column is slightly recession based.
